On the eastern side of the "Venusbassin" lies the "Steppengarten", embedded in an almost circular walkway. The garden was created in 1953 by park director Wilhelm Alverdes. For decades it has delighted visitors with flowers and grasses that are hungry for sunshine and capable of surviving long periods of dryness. Because of its location near to the Berlin Wall built in 1961, the garden gradually faded into oblivion.

Having been completely replanted in 2009, since 2011 the garden has been maintained on a voluntary basis with much enthusiasm and commitment (please see also www.steppengarten.de).
The following institutions also support the project: Grünflächenamt (the local parks and gardens authority), Berliner Gartendenkmalpflege (the local garden monument authority), the Gesellschaft der Staudenfreunde e.V. (GDS) and the BUND.
