Traffic-related Emissions and Immissions 2002

Summary

Environmental zones, driving bans, 30 km/h speed limit: when it comes to traffic, Berlin is working hard in the name of fresh air. Cars, buses and trucks are still the main sources of air pollution. Although a lot has been done to reduce pollutants, limits for particulate matter and nitrogen oxides are still being exceeded.

The Clean Air Plan has been updated to bring about change. It now covers the years 2018 to 2025. The plan analyses the causes of air pollution, makes forecasts and investigates potential measures to improve air quality, including access restrictions for diesel vehicles. Berlin’s main goal here is to reduce nitrogen dioxide in the air, which – unsurprisingly – is most often detected on primary roads.

Besides regular measurements, model calculations may be of use. The difference: while measurements represent a limited area close to the measurement site, model calculations can provide an overview of pollutant levels for the entire city area.
