The main aquifer predominantly consists of sands and gravel of the Saale Ice Age. In the glacial valley, the groundwater surface is largely unconfined, while on the plateaus it may be confined under a layer of boulder marl. The Panke Valley, which contains a substantial autonomous groundwater reserve, is shaded here.
