It was built after German reunification according to the award-winning competition design by Axel Schultes Architects (1992). The development of the Spreebogen (the area around the characteristic bend in the Spree river) with the Kanzleramt and Bundestag buildings makes reference to the representative government buildings already dominant in this area since the 19th century.
