Initial learning assessment in Year 7

Schülerinnen und Schüler unter Aufsicht von Lehrkräften

When children transition from primary to secondary school, they enter a new learning environment. At their new school, they should be picked up where they are in the learning process and receive individual support. It is therefore imperative for teachers to identify their initial learning levels in the first few months and familiarise them with the new requirements.

At their new school, they should be picked up where they are in the learning process and receive individual support. For teachers, it is therefore a priority in the first few months to identify their pupils’ starting point and familiarise them with the new requirements.

The Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family Affairs supports teachers in this endeavour. It provides a new tool for quality development and assurance in Year 7 lessons, as well as a basis for effective diagnostics:

German, mathematics, first foreign language and natural sciences

For the subjects German, mathematics, English and French as first foreign languages, schools receive a workbook for all pupils with tasks at the standard level specified in the framework curricula for the end of Year 6.

For the first foreign language, schools also receive CDs with audio texts. The assessment of the initial learning situation is not a test followed by an evaluation, but rather a series of tasks designed to determine what skills the pupils already have and what measures are necessary for individual support.

Teachers can download a student and teacher booklet entitled ‘Lernausgangslage Naturwissenschaften 7’ (Starting Point for Learning Science 7) for use in biology, chemistry and physics lessons. The tasks for assessing the starting point for learning science in Year 7 are provided by the iMINT Academy Berlin in cooperation with the LISUM Berlin-Brandenburg.

The results of the tasks are discussed with the pupils and prepared in such a way that they also provide parents with a clear insight into the level of performance and the measures required for further development. Now everyone knows how to move forward successfully.
