In the southern area of the Großer Tiergarten park and in Schöneberg-Nord around Nollendorfplatz underage boys, mainly from Eastern Europe, offer their sexual services to potential clients, sometimes very aggressively, for a small fee.
The boys, aged 11-17, do not prostitute themselves voluntarily, but are victims of sexual exploitation and abuse. They are often brought to Berlin by their older family members, mostly male, and here they are deliberately led into male-male prostitution in order to contribute to the family income. The money earned through prostitution is taken from them. It is not always immediately obvious that the boys are minors and that they are under duress.
It is not only the family members acting as pimps, who are liable to prosecution for exploiting the boys, but also the use of their sexual services leads to police investigations for the sexual abuse of minors.
In addition to the criminal prosecution of the pimps and clients, the Berlin police have taken wideranging preventive measures and work in cooperation with other authorities and independent agencies, to offer help, protection and an alternative lifestyle to the boys.
