Leichte SpracheWie sehen Künstler*innen die (Un-)Möglichkeit einer friedlichen Lösung des israelisch-palästinensischen Konflikts? Wie lösen sie sich von den gängigen bildnerischen Mitteln? Und welche Rolle spielt die symbolische Repräsentation? Ein Programm von kurzen Animations-, Experimental-, Dokumentar- und Spielfilmen – u.a. von Samira Badran, Yael Bartana, Mamdooh Afdile & Iddo Soskolne – beschäftigt sich mit diesen und anderen Fragen, nicht ohne das Wissen um die Schwierigkeit und Komplexität der Darstellung des Nahostkonflikts, der Region, der Menschen und ihrer Realitäten.

Representations of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Selected shorts
How do artists see the (im-)possibility of a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? How do they break away from the common pictorial means? And what role does symbolic representation play in this context? A program of short animated, experimental, documentary, and fiction films — i.a. by Samira Badran, Yael Bartana, Mamdooh Afdile & Iddo Soskolne — considers these and other questions while acknowledging the trouble and the complexity of (mis-)representation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the people, the region, and the continuing state of affairs.

Über die Veranstaltungsreihe “Stimmen aus Nahost: Künstlerische Positionen und kulturelle Perspektiven”
Die Veranstaltungsreihe öffnet den Diskurs mit Künstler*innen und Kulturschaffenden, die sich in Werk und Praxis direkt oder indirekt mit dem Nahostkonflikt auseinandersetzen. Wie können die verhärteten Fronten durchkreuzt und Räume für eine konstruktive Auseinandersetzung geschaffen werden? Können starre Muster der Repräsentation aufgebrochen werden? Und welche Rolle spielen dabei Medien- und Kulturschaffende der jüngeren Generation in Deutschland?
Diese und andere Fragen werden im Laufe des Sommers mit verschiedenen Akteur*innen aus Nahost diskutiert. Eine (digitale) Diskussionsrunde setzt sich kritisch mit Initiativen auseinander, die Palästinenser*innen und Israelis zusammenführen wollen. Ein (analoger) Filmabend beschäftigt sich mit der Repräsentation des Konflikts und seiner Akteur*innen. Und ein (analoger/digitaler) Literaturabend lässt arabische, jüdische sowie jüdisch-arabische Schriftsteller*innen zu Wort kommen, die im Berliner „Exil“ einen jüdisch-muslimischen Dialog schaffen wollen.
Initiiert und konzipiert wird die Reihe von Studierenden des Masterstudienganges Kulturjournalismus an der Universität der Künste Berlin, und durchgeführt in Kooperation mit der Berliner Landeszentrale für politische Bildung und dem Studium Generale der Universität der Künste Berlin. Die Veranstaltungen finden in englischer Sprache statt.
Voices from the Middle East: Artistic views and cultural perspectives
The event series seeks the conversation with artists and cultural actors who concern themselves with the conflict in the Middle East in their work, directly or indirectly. How can hardened fronts be crossed, instead creating room for constructive debate? Can inflexible patterns of representation be broken up? Which roles do journalists and cultural thinkers from a younger generation in Germany play?
Over the course of the summer, these and other questions will be debated with protagonists from the Middle East. A (digital) discussion round will critically engage with initiatives that have made it their aim to link Palestinians and Israelis. A (analogue) film night will investigate the representation of the conflict and its protagonists. A (analogue / digital) literature evening will give voice to Arab, Jewish as well as Jewish-Arab writers, who are carving out space for a Jewish-Muslim dialogue in their Berlin “exile”.
The series is initiated and conceptualised by students from the cultural journalism MA at the Berlin University of the Arts. It is realised in collaboration with the Berliner Landeszentrale für politische Bildung and the Studium Generale of the Berlin University of the Arts. All events will be conducted in English.
