Lilienthal memorial

Lilienthal Gedenkstätte 3

Mechanical engineer Otto Lilienthal (1848–1896) started building “flying machines” in 1874. In 1891 he managed to make the first successful gliding flights in history in Derwitz and the Rhinow region. Three years later he had a 15-meter artificial hill built in Lichterfelde, where he practiced his flights. In 1932, Fritz Freymüller, a Berlin architect and the Steglitz borough councilor for building and planning, redesigned this hill as a Lilienthal memorial.
