Founded in 1874, the Märkisches Museum is today the main home of the Stiftung (foundation) Stadtmuseum Berlin. In more than 50 rooms, this popular museum explores the history of Berlin, from its origins to the present.
The Berlin Wall was a powerful symbol of the division of Germany. After the peaceful revolution in the GDR and the reunification of Berlin, the Wall disappeared almost overnight from the Berlin cityscape. The Wall segments on display in front of the Märkisches Museum, with their original paintings on the side that once faced west, are integrated into the museum grounds like other fragments of historic or artistic significance.Berlin City Museum (Stadtmuseum Berlin)
