A part of the border between the boroughs of Neukölln (former West Berlin) and Treptow-Köpenick (former East Berlin) lay between the bridge Baumschulenwegbrücke and the Britz-Ost harbor along the Britzer Zweigkanal. At the confluence of this canal and the Teltowkanal, the border made a sharp turn to the south along the eastern bank of the Teltowkanal. A six-lane expressway (the A113) was built here on the site of the former border strip and completed in May 2008. It connects Berlin’s “city highway” to Schönefeld Airport and to the expressway encircling the Berlin metropolitan area.
In these aerial photos from 2005, the outer wall, built on the border to West Berlin, is marked in red, and the inner wall behind it in blue. The political border that was crucial to fugitives is shown in yellow wherever it deviates from the location of the outer wall.
