Memorial for the victims of the Wall and German division

Denkmal Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer

Unveiled on 13 August 1998 by the Federal Republic of Germany in memory of the city’s division from 13 August 1961 to 9 November 1989 and of the victims of communist tyranny, this memorial was designed by the Stuttgart architects Kohlhoff & Kohlhoff. It incorporates surviving traces of the original border installations on Bernauer Strasse and strives to enhance and accentuate these in its design. Two steel walls bracket off a 70-meter-long section of the original border installations. The competition to design the memorial was preceded by several years of contentious debate about the appropriate way to commemorate the victims of the Wall and German division.
