Berlin has a large number of cemeteries. Since there is no central burial file, the search for a certain deceased person’s grave can prove difficult and time-consuming. If there is information as to the last domicile of a deceased person, it is advisable to begin searching in the respective borough. Moreover, while the state-owned cemeteries are administered by the borough cemetery administrations, the denominational cemeteries are under the respective church communities, or of administrative commissions, which operate for several church communities.
According to the Administrative Fees Regulation, the search for a certain deceased person’s grave is undertaken outside the repose periods by the borough cemetery administration, and is subject to a fee – even in case of failure.
