Berlin’s cultural affairs department awards and/or finances work stipends and residency stipends for writers living in Berlin. The 2010/2011 two-year budget allocated €208,000 a year to these stipends.

Other current stipend programs can be found at www.literaturport.de(Externer Link).

Work stipends for Berlin writers
Thirteen stipends of €12,000 each have been set up to give writers with a permanent residence in Berlin the chance to start literary works they have already planned or drafted or to work on or finish works that were started earlier. Writers with no published work are also eligible to apply.
Recipients are awarded a monthly stipend of €2,000 over a six-month funding period.
Current application materials are available as of 15 December of each year for the coming year. The application deadline is 31 January of the funding year.
The jury makes its decisions by the end of April; stipends begin in June. (See funding recipients)

Residency stipends
The residency stipends financed by the cultural affairs department for a stay at the Alfred-Döblin-Haus in Wewelsfleth or Künstlerhaus Ahrenshoop(Externer Link) are artist-in-residence programs for Berlin writers. They include a rent-free stay and a monthly stipend. The residency stipend is intended to give writers time for creative work that does not have to be completed by the end of the funding period.

The organizers run the application and awards process themselves and can be contacted for details.
