A traditional location linking research, development and production

In the central borough of Berlin-Mitte, the Humboldthain site is dedicated to business and technology, building a bridge between the past and the future. The former AEG factory buildings may recall the late nineteenth century and Berlin’s years as an industrial capital, but today they are home to the Technology Park (TIB) with the first German Innovation and Start-up Center (BIG), founded in the 1980s. The adjacent high-tech buildings offer space for production-driven companies and businesses in the creative sector.

The particular character of the Humboldthain Technology Park comes from its mix of private and public research institutions which, in turn, work closely with the various businesses on the site. Here, for example, one not only finds the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration (IZM), specialising in industry-oriented applied research, but also the TU Berlin (Wedding Campus) as well as renowned international companies. The Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises has supported the founding of a site management to drive forwards cooperation between industry, science and research. In this way, potential synergies can be exploited to the full and research findings transferred quickly and efficiently to application-oriented products and services.

At present, the Fraunhofer IZM Insitute is developing an innovation centre for product-adapted multi-functional electronics – AdaptSys – to stimulate the process of fusing product manufacturing and microelectronics. The funding for the project, amounting to EUR 40 million, is being provided by the federal state of Berlin, the European Union, and the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft.
