Home Taxidermy: Performance/Workshop – Launching event of the exhibition: „Navigating between Gravities Jüdisches Leben in Berlin, Damals und Heute”
The digital exhibition Navigating between Gravities: Jüdisches Leben in Berlin, Damals und Jetzt, curated by Sapir Huberman and Dr. Debby Farber, features its second launching event in Friedrichshain: Home Taxidermy, in collaboration with artist Noa Heyne.
In the first part of the event, the two curators will give the audience a closer look at the exhibition in the digital space. In the second part, the audience will have the opportunity to actively participate. Artist Noa Heyne will lead a performative workshop for this purpose.
“Navigating between Gravities” is an invitation to a multifaceted journey, navigating between two charged and complex times and spaces: A historical map that reveals traces of the Jewish life that once flourished in Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain and Neukölln, before the rise of the Nazi regime, overlaid by a map of the Jewish present – following the October 7 terror attack on Israel and the devastating war in Gaza. The exhibition can be browsed in the following link: navigatingravities.de.
Home Taxidermy invites members of the audience to share stories about the places they grew up in and, together with artist Noa Heyne, transform their fragmented memories into physical objects. Thinking of the attempts of immigrants and refugees to rebuild a home in a foreign place, taxidermy is taken here as a metaphor for the act of preserving or reenacting life after it was removed from its original context. During the event, the artist will give a short presentation of her work, and then conduct the performance/workshop together with the audience and two assistants. Prior to the performance/workshop, the exhibition’s curators will present the exhibition.
Noa Heyne is an interdisciplinary artist based in Berlin and part of the digital exhibition “Navigating between gravities. ”Heyne’s work is often rooted in themes of belonging and loss, focusing on the idea of home as a site of personal sanctuary and collective memory. Her installations navigate the complex terrain between preservation and renewal, questioning how architecture serves as both a physical and emotional map of history.
