A short note on our experience with Berlin’s Emigrantenprogramm

In May of 2016 my wife Barbara and I participated in this program by the Berlin Senate and the experience far exceeded our expectations. I had applied a long time ago but until recently thought it no longer existed. Years ago it dealt with large groups of people on chartered flights and buses. But sadly the number of qualifying Holocaust survivors is diminishing rapidly. This year perhaps six individuals will participate, which allows customizing the experience to meet the special interests as well as any physical constraints of the attendees.

In addition to airplane tickets for two, a week’s stay at a wonderful Kurfürstendamm hotel, opera or concert tickets, sightseeing and free public transport coupons as well as a modest daily Euro allowance, the program also provided us with a terrific volunteer, Barbara Boehm- Tettelbach, who spent considerable and very helpful time with us. This included pickup at the airport, a visit to the spectacular top of the Reichstag with a guided tour in English, a visit to Potsdam and many other enjoyable activities. Especially valuable were introductions to some researchers who unearthed fascinating and previously unknown parts of our family history. Equally helpful was Christian Krüger, the coordinator of the program (E-Mail).

I understand the program is available to former Berliners who are Holocaust survivors (not only Jews) and left during the National Socialist times. Understandably some people may be reluctant to return to Berlin or be concerned about the physical demands of this visit on us old people. However, I would encourage anyone who believes is eligible to contact Christian. This experience is rewarding, interesting and reassuring that Germany is facing its dark past in the most honest and straightforward way.

I’d be happy to answer any questions.
