Mauerpark (Wall park)

The section of the former border strip running from Behmstrasse to Bernauer Strasse has been remade into a park. Visitors can also take an interesting walk past many traces of the Wall from Behmstrasse along Norwegerstrasse in the direction of Bornholmer Strasse or from Eberswalder Strasse along Bernauer Strasse to the Berlin Wall Memorial.

Section of the original inner wall

Section of the original inner wall

A roughly 300-meter-long section of the inner wall runs along the back of the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Stadion. The inner wall was unusually high and massive here because of the many people visiting the stadium, the home of the soccer team Dynamo Berlin.

Berlin Wall History Mile

Berlin Wall History Mile

In 1964, three years after the construction of the Berlin Wall, the GDR government laid out a 100-meter-wide "border zone" along the border to West Berlin. Inside the zone were 28 apartment houses with around 1500 tenants, not including children, in the Gleimviertel neighborhood east of the S-Bahn line. A Berlin Wall History Mile info board at Falkplatz looks at what life in this border zone was like.
