Documentation centers and museums

The Berlin Wall was the symbol of German division, of the GDR leadership’s contempt for human rights and basic freedoms, and of the confrontation between two political systems after the end of the Second World War. However, the Wall also symbolizes the defeat of the SED regime initiated by the peaceful revolution in the GDR and the unification of Germany in October 1990. As a result, the aspects that can be linked to the documentation of the GDR’s border fortifications and to remembering the victims of the Berlin Wall are very diverse.

You can learn more about the historical background and about individual fates at the Berlin Wall Memorial and at the Wall museum Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie, both located along the former course of the Wall. Other memorial sites, documentation centers, and museums with relevant exhibitions can be found all over the city.
