History Walk to 24 “anchor buildings”

Karl-Marx-Allee is a very special place in Berlin!
Here you can learn more about the key architectural buildings along Karl-Marx-Allee – the “anchor buildings”. They form the backbone of urban planning in modern East Germany and can be explored via an interactive map.

In the first construction phase (eastern part of Karl-Marx-Allee, abbreviated to: KMA I) – between Frankfurter Tor and Strausberger Platz – we present 10 “anchor buildings” and the Rosengarten green space. They were built between 1950 and 1958.

In the second construction phase (western part of Karl-Marx-Allee, abbreviated to: KMA II) – between Strausberger Platz and Alexanderplatz – we present 13 “anchor buildings”. They were built between 1959 and 1964.

Contemporary photos help you locate them there. Let us inspire you to learn about the buildings and their fascinating surroundings and understand why they are listed monuments. Historical photos help you compare the present and past. What has changed? What has been preserved?

An interactive map marks the locations of the “anchor buildings” on the Allee and helps you navigate.
