Two meticulously designed green spaces for relaxation and remembrance

The two green spaces near the residential buildings on Karl-Marx-Allee are Rosengarten and Weberwiese. They are located close to one another on either side of the avenue.

Compared to the more unstructured landscape of the Weberwiese park, created in 1953, the Rosengarten from 1954 has a formal, geometric layout. The Rosengarten is effectively bordered by three residential blocks. Beyond the avenue, one can see one of the New Objectivity balcony access buildings.

Originally, a cinema was to be built on the site of the Rosengarten (the Kosmos and International Cinemas were built at alternative sites in 1962/63).

The rectangular lawn is bordered by shrubs and trees. With its benches, the striking rose pergola is a pleasant place to spend time.

Since 2003, a small brick wall with a plaque has recalled the Stalinallee Construction Workers’ Uprising of 16 June 1953 which took place here. On the following day, it swelled to become the Popular Uprising of 17 June.
