“For a honey flip and Turkish coffee […]”

The Mocha Dairy and Ice Cream Parlour was probably the most visited pavilion on Karl-Marx-Allee. The 1970 song bearing its German name, Mocha-Milch-Eisbar made it famous nationwide.

The pavilion is dominated by the large, aluminium-framed shop windows and the facing with glass strips in olive-green, white, blue and black. The large surfaces are clad in by sunny yellow, structured ceramic tiles – like those that once adorned all four retail pavilions.

A key feature of all six pavilions was the neon sign by Klaus Wittkugel on the roof, which has now been restored.

The bright parlour, with its two glass façades giving onto Karl-Marx-Allee and Schillingstraße, once featured a timber-clad buffet. Beneath the protruding part of the gallery, there was a bar with a counter and stools. The parlour and gallery on the upper floor offered abundant seating.
