The end of socialist Classicism

Block G is among the last buildings of the monumental street that forms the first construction phase of Karl-Marx-Allee, which ended at Strausberger Platz. It is also the eastern continuation of the Karl-Marx-Allee, which becomes Frankfurter Allee here.

Compared with the six earlier blocks (A to F), Block G North has a far more rhythmic fundamental form. This is created by alternating protruding and recessed elements. Lateral head-end buildings frame passageways into the hinterland and create courtyard-like openings. They are backed by a decorative colonnade with a clock and a transverse block with a balustrade of figures.

Compared with the other blocks, Block G features the clearest references to 19th century Classicism in Berlin.
