Ceramic-clad large panel building – an architectural monument since 2013

The area between Strausberger Platz and Alexanderplatz is dominated by residential architecture constructed using industrially prefabricated large panels, built between 1959 and 1964.

One example of this is the eight-story high-rise slab at Schillingstraße 27–29. Built in 1965, it is a customised version of construction type Q P (Querwand-Plattenbauweise: transverse wall prefabricated panel construction), abbreviated to ‘Querplatte’ (transverse panel).

This is the only residential slab block in the KMA II area whose façade has not been changed or thermally insulated in recent years. Only here is the innovative original cladding of the lightweight concrete panels with ceramic tiles preserved. The bright matte glossy tiles, some of which (on the cornice) feature colour ornamentation, were produced by VEB Plattenwerk Meißen, a state-owned panel factory.

Today, the once open joints between the large panels are covered with metal strips, to prevent UV light degrading the asbestos-based filling compound.
