With 332 medical technology and 255 biotech companies, 34 pharmaceuticals companies, and more than 130 hospitals and clinics, Berlin is one of the most important life science locations in Germany and one of the leading bio centres in Europe. One in eight Berliners (about 373,000) work in the capital region's healthcare industry. The industry generates about €27 billion in revenue each year.

Unique in Europe is the concentration of numerous large research institutions and universities focusing on the life sciences. These include internationally renowned institutions such as the Charité, Europe's largest university hospital, the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine, the Institute for Micro and Medical Technology at TU Berlin, the German Rheumatism Research Centre, and the German Heart Centre Berlin.
