Science at the highest level

In the 2021/22 winter semester, more than 200,000 students opted for the courses offered by the internationally renowned Berlin universities and colleges. Berlin enjoys global popularity as a place to study: 22% of its students come from abroad. They come to be part of one of the largest and most diverse centres for science and research in Europe:

  • 4 universities plus the Charité University Hospital
  • 4 universities for the arts,
  • 5 universities of applied sciences,
  • 25 private universities,
  • approx. 70 non-university research facilities

Universities

The Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the largest medical faculty in Europe and one of the oldest and most traditional hospital companies in Germany, unites the medical institutions of the Humboldt-Universität and the Freie Universität.

The “Berlin University Alliance” of the Freie Universität, Humboldt-Universität and Technische Universität was recognised as an alliance of excellence by the Federal and State governments as part of the excellence strategy.
