The eye-catching Oberbaum Bridge connects the districts of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg and is considered the most beautiful bridge in Berlin.

Berlin boasts more bridges than Venice - in fact, Germany's capital city has nearly 1,000 bridge structures from a wide variety of stylistic eras. The elaborately designed Oberbaumbrücke is one of the most beautiful and imposing bridges in the city. Since 1896, it has connected the districts of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg across the Spree River. The bridge was once home to the so-called Oberbaum, where customs duties were collected.

The bridge was a symbol of division between between East and West Germany during the Cold War. Armed guards patrolled the border area on the banks of the Spree River as a border area and the Oberbaum Bridge was one of the few crossover checkpoints from West to East. More recently, the Oberbaum Bridge starred in the Hollywood movie "The Bourne Supremacy" (2004), which was filmed on location in Berlin.

Architecture

The Oberbaum Bridge is used by pedestrians as well as cars and the subway. Road traffic as well as Berlin's oldest subway line pass over it, while pedestrians use the walkway underneath. The supporting structure for the subway train tracks was architecturally clad and decorated with medieval-looking ornaments, creating a structure that resembles a castle of the Mark Brandenburg region.

Around Oberbaum Bridge

Berlin's pop culture has settled on both banks of the river in the area surrounding the Oberbaum Bridge. Countless clubs and concert location attract the city's party crowd. Especially the area around the subway station Schlesische Straße on the Kreuzberg side is an El Dorado for night owls. Meanwhile, the so-called Media-Spree on the site of the former Osthafen harbor is home to many companies of the music and fashion industry. The offices of Universal Music, for example, are located in a converted refrigerated warehouse for chicken eggs dating from 1928/29 right next to the Oberbaum Bridge.
