Welcome to the Red Town Hall! This historic building houses the offices of the Governing Mayor of Berlin and the Governing Mayor’s administrative staff, the Senate Chancellery. Each year, about 80,000 visitors come here – for exhibitions, tours and official ceremonies. You can view the ceremonial rooms free of charge. Because the Red Town Hall is an active workplace rather than a museum, it may sometimes be closed to the public. Follow the tour to discover more about this Berlin landmark.
The Red Town Hall is the most important building designed by the German architect Hermann Friedrich Waesemann. It was built between 1861 and 1869 in the Neo-Renaissance style. The name “Red Town Hall” was inspired by the distinctive red-brick façade, which stands out among the other official buildings in the center of Berlin. Since the time of its construction, the Red Town Hall and its tower – measuring 94 meters to the top of the flagpole – has represented the pride of Berlin’s people.
