1000 apartments planned for state employees

Wohnungsbau in Berlin

The Berlin Senate plans to provide 1000 apartments for state employees over the next four years.

Construction projects and the purchase of suitable plots of land as well as the purchase of apartments are planned, Senator for the Interior Iris Spranger (SPD) announced on Tuesday. A special brokerage platform is also being considered.

Affordable housing to attract skilled workers

Spranger and Finance Senator Stefan Evers (CDU) pointed out that the public sector urgently needs skilled workers and must become more attractive in the competition for the best minds. In view of the housing shortage in Berlin, this includes offering affordable housing, not least for trainees.

No competition from apartments for state employees

The state-owned housing company Berlinovo currently rents out around 5,500 residential units to state employees. In order to increase this number and bundle corresponding activities, the Senate has now set up a coordination group consisting of representatives from various Senate administrations and a coordination office. Spranger emphasized that so-called employee housing is not in competition with the Senate's efforts to build 20,000 new apartments per year. The apartments for state employees are planned in addition.
