The reunified district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg is home to several significant landmarks from the time when Berlin was divided into East and West. One of the most important sights in Kreuzberg is the former Checkpoint Charlie border crossing, where Soviet and American tanks faced off in 1961. On the other side of the Spree River, one of the major sights in in Friedrichshain is the East Side Gallery, the longest open-air gallery in the world and one of the longest preserved sections of the Berlin Wall.
