Modern, international and lively: Between Ostbahnhof and Jannowitzbrücke, Uber Platz acts as a leisure mile for a young, thoroughly urban and active crowd.
In addition to leisure facilities such as a cinema, bowling center, event arenas, restaurants and stores, the area on the Spree also includes offices and hotels. Green outdoor areas with a fountain field provide a contrast to the surrounding buildings and invite people to relax in the open air. Thanks to its central location in lively Friedrichshain, a visit to Uber Platz (formerly Mercedes Platz) is easy to manage. The square can be reached quickly by bus, train or excursion boat. There are numerous entertainment and amusement options for strollers and shopping enthusiasts near the East Side Gallery.
The leisure hotspot was created on the former industrial estate of the Ostgüterbahnhof. In addition to railroad tracks and storage sheds, the large area was home to a petrol station, a car paint shop and a concrete factory. With the conversion and repurposing of the site, another industrial wasteland in the center of Berlin became an urban quarter. The ground-breaking ceremony for the new urban quarter at the East Side Gallery took place on June 6, 2016. The official opening of the square followed on October 13, 2018.
Another highlight of Uber Platz is the East Side Mall. The concept of the shopping center aims to establish itself as a modern marketplace through a mix of different sectors. Fashion, jewelry, food, electronics, drugstore items and services can be purchased in the East Side Mall.
Thanks to its central location, Uber Platz is an ideal starting or finishing point for a boat trip through Berlin's city center. Numerous tours are available to tourists and Berliners from the pier at the East Side Gallery. On steamboat trips lasting 1.5 to 4 hours across Berlin's waters, the capital shows itself from a new, charming side.
A total of 21,000 people can enjoy concerts, shows and sporting events in the two arenas on Uber Platz. The Uber Arena has been welcoming around 1.3 million visitors a year since fall 2008, when it was still known as the O2 World. The multifunctional hall is also known for hosting the home games of Alba Berlin and the Eisbären Berlin. Between 2018 and March 2024, the arena was named after the sponsor Mercedes-Benz. The Uber Eats Music Hall (formerly Verti Music Hall, named after the insurance company Verti) opened at the same time as Mercedes Platz - now Uber Platz - in October 2018.
Those looking for refreshments after an intensive shopping spree or a long walk will find snacks, drinks and warm meals at one of the numerous restaurants, snack stands and bars at and around Uber Platz. The food court at the East Side Mall offers a wide variety of foods as well. The rooftop bars on Uber Platz offer a very special view of the city from above.
