Office of the Governing Mayor

Amtszimmer im Roten Rathaus

The Governing Mayor of Berlin is both head of the state of Berlin and its government. After the elections to the Berlin House of Representatives, which are usually held every five years, a coalition government is formed and the representatives elect the Governing Mayor. The Governing Mayor appoints the other members of government (referred to as senators), presides over the Berlin Senate, determines the guidelines of government policy and ensures they are followed. From his office he steers the city’s affairs; it’s where he works, receives state guests, gives interviews and holds talks and political discussions.

Kai Wegner has been Governing Mayor of Berlin since 27 April 2023. On this website you can find an overview of all the Governing Mayors of Berlin (only in german).

Before the Red Town Hall was badly damaged during World War II and rebuilt in the 1950s, the two-story room where the city government met was located where the Governing Mayor’s office is today.

Because the Governing Mayor uses his office on a daily basis, it can be visited only virtually.
