The Ahrensfelde Hills in Marzahn-Hellersdorf are the fourth highest elevation in Berlin and offer a view as far as the TV Tower in Mitte.
At 114.5 meters, the western peak of the Ahrensfelder Berge (Ahrensfelde Hills) is the highest elevation in the north-eastern district of Marzahn-Hellersdorf. The smaller of the two hills is 101 meters high. The elevations are located on the border between Berlin and the Brandenburg district of Barnim, right next to the Wuhletal valley. The Ahrensfelde Hills were formed as narrow mounds of loose material, so-called esker. At 66.9 meters, the western peak was almost half as high as it is today.
Between 1981 and 1991, the Ahrensfelde hills were used as a building rubble dump. The western elevation grew to 112 meters. With the end of the GDR, the two hills were used as a place for waste disposal by parts of the Red Army and local residents. The landfill site there was closed in 1991 and a far-reaching transformation of the local park began.
In 2008, the western hill was raised by 3.5 metres and converted into a viewing platform. From the western summit, both the Berlin TV Tower and the Brandenburg hinterland can be seen. The view over Brandenburg's wind turbines contrasts with the high-rise housing estates in Marzahn.
The Ahrensfelde Hills are quite easy to reach by car or public transport. They are located near Landsberger Allee and various subway and S-Bahn stations. In order to reach the viewing platform on the western summit, you have a choice of two paths. The first path leads south up the mountain and splits halfway. There, you have the option of taking the path to the smaller mountain or the one to the viewing platform. The second path to the top of the western hill is a trail on the northern side. It is steeper than the first path and has no direct connection to the smaller mountain.
Near the Ahrensfelde Hills flows the Wuhle, a 16.5-kilometre-long river that cutss through the Wuhletal valley. The area around the banks of the Wuhle has been left mostly untouched, so there is a good chance of spotting deer, hares, foxes or wild boars. The surrounding area offers many opportunities for walkers, joggers, hikers and cyclists. The quiet nature also offers ideal surroundings for a picnic. Not far from the Ahrensfelde Hills are several parks, including the Gardens of the World.
