The central legal and content-related basis for the Berlin State Office for Equal Treatment and against Discrimination (LADS) is the General Equal Treatment Law (AGG). This law is intended to prevent or remove any disadvantages related to ethnic origin, sex, religion, disability, age or sexual identity.

Therefore the LADS acts on the basis of a horizontal approach pursuant to this non-discrimination law: There must be no hierarchies among the grounds of discrimination; all grounds are equally worthy of protection and all must be defended with the same level of determination.

Main objectives

  • Promoting a culture of esteem for diversity and non-discrimination
  • Localisation and reduction of structural discrimination
  • Set-up of a network-oriented self-help and advisory infrastructure
