The “city partnership between Berlin and Tel Aviv-Yafo was founded with a joint declaration on 5 May 2025 at the Red Town Hall during a visit of the mayor of Tel Aviv-Yafo, Ron Huldai. It is a testament to Berlin’s historic responsibility to the Jewish community and a clear commitment to strengthen the German-Israeli relationship.
This partnership builds on decades of contact between Berlin and Israel, including long-standing ties between Berlin’s boroughs and Israeli cities. This close relationship is also reflected in the diverse activities of the Israeli community in Berlin.
Berlin and Tel Aviv-Yafo are both modern, liberal capitals with innovative potential, cultural diversity and vibrant civil societies. Our partnership is based on shared values such as freedom, democracy and tolerance and aims to strengthen political, economic and cultural dialogue. It will also provide new momentum in areas such as innovation, affordable housing, climate action, sustainable urban development and migration.
Our cooperation will focus on culture and education as well. Joint exhibitions, theater collaborations and artist exchange programs in both cities deepen our relationship. Numerous connections among young people, school partnerships and diverse cooperations between universities foster our bilateral dialogue on education.
With the city partnership, Berlin reaffirms its long-standing commitment to remembrance, diversity and a mutual vision for our cities’ shared future.
