Commissioner of the Berlin Senate for Participation, Integration and Migration

Katarina Niewiedzial
Without migration, Berlin’s history – and its future – would be unthinkable.
Katarina Niewiedzial

Dear Berliners,

Migration has always shaped our city, and it will continue to do so. Integration and, above all, participation are central issues for Berlin. Topics that I have been adressing in my role as the Commissioner of the Berlin Senate for Participation, Integration and Migration since 2019. I feel a great sense of pride and respect in this role, especially towards the people who come to us. Berlin remains an aspiration place that attracts many people from abroad whether for work, or study, or because they are fleeing conflict and repression.

Berlin has a history of migration

More than one in three people in Berlin has a history of migration, and this figure is increasing Each of these stories is unique. From my own experience, I know what challenges people face when arriving in a new country. I migrated from Poland to Germany with my family in 1990, shortly after the fall of the Iron Curtain, when I was twelve years old. This is why I can empathise with newcomers who tell me how difficult the first steps in our city can be.

As the central contact point and ombudsperson, I support all these people, whether they have just arrived or have lived here for many years. I ensure that they can exercise their rights and that their interests are represented. My dedicated team and I find solutions to help people settle in and participate in our society, whether through employment, education, housing or health. Our Welcome Centre, in particular, provides multilingual, independent and free advice on social and legal issues. For a united and solidary Europe.

Having studied Political Science in Berlin, Oldenburg and Limerick, Ireland, and I am a committed European. My work constantly reminds me of the importance of state institutions in enabling a democratic, diverse and fair society. This is why I enjoy working in the Berlin administration, first at district level and, since 2019, at state level. From the outset, my goal has been to make civil service a more attractive and accessible employer, particular for people with a history of migration. A democratic society as diverse as ours can only function if everyone feels represented and if solidarity prevails.

Strong civil society and participation

Berlin has a vibrant civil society, which has been strengthened in particular by the numerous migrant organisations. I work closely with many of these organisations and support their work through funding programmes. The State Advisory Council for Participation also champions the views and requirements of individuals who are not eligible to vote. After all, democracy thrives on participation, a belief that has underpinned my entire professional career.

I would like to warmly invite anyone who is interested to share their experiences and to enter into dialogue. Together, let’s work to foster good coexistence in Berlin.

Yours,
Katarina Niewiedzial
