City networking in the context of forced migration, migration and participation

Grafik für Städtenetzwerkarbeit

Berlin is involved in national, European and international city networks in order to achieve a humanitarian asylum and migration policy. The Department of Integration and Migration and the Commissioner for Participation, Integration and Migration are actively involved and thus provide important impetus for the improved integration of refugees and migrants.

This commitment takes place both within the framework of bilateral city partnerships, such as between Berlin and Istanbul, as well as in city networks.

Different goals are pursued depending on the type of city cooperation:

  • Networking between cities and civil society actors: Working together towards a more humanitarian asylum and migration policy at federal and EU level.
  • Exchange of experience: The exchange on specific issues relating to the reception, accommodation and participation of refugees and migrants between cities is promoted.
  • Capacity building through cooperation: Municipal capacities will be expanded through joint pilot projects and knowledge sharing.
  • Berlin’s role model function: Successful approaches from Berlin to refugee and migration policy will be communicated to the outside world to serve as a model for other cities. In this way, Berlin also wants to contribute to the development of quality standards for the reception of refugees and welcome structures for migrants, both regionally and internationally.
