Where are they now: Verimi

‘The future therefore belongs to digital identities, Verimi’s core business.’
– Roland Adrian, Managing Director Verimi

Since winning the Deep Tech Award 2022, Verimi has undergone remarkable development. What began as an award for technological depth in the IT security category proved, in retrospect, to be the starting point for a phase of intensive growth and strategic refinement. Three years later, it is clear that the award was less of a goal and more of a catalyst.

Founded in 2017, Verimi positioned itself early on as a pioneer for digital identities in Germany. Even before receiving the Deep Tech Star award, the multi-joint venture of the German economy stood for sophisticated identity procedures in a highly regulated environment. Since then, the company has consistently developed this claim further – with measurable success.

From award to economic milestone

After 2022, Verimi continued its growth trajectory. In 2024, the company reached break-even, accompanied by a sharp rise in sales. In the same year, the number of users grew tenfold compared to the previous year. Verimi had already expanded its portfolio in 2023 with the acquisition of Yes.com AG. At the same time, new shareholders such as Atruvia, DZ Bank, Crif and High Tech Gründerfonds acquired stakes in the company.

A particularly significant step was the entry into the healthcare sector. In December 2023, Verimi launched as a sectoral identity provider in the eHealth market after receiving approval from gematik. This laid the foundation for the Barmer health insurance company’s health ID. The launch for the AOK health insurance companies followed in early 2025. Nearly 50 per cent of all people with statutory health insurance in Germany now have access to a digital identity solution from Verimi.

Tailor-made solutions instead of standard products

Verimi has also clearly sharpened its strategic focus. ‘Based on our proven ID wallet infrastructure, we have consistently expanded our range of services to include white label solutions on behalf of our partners,’ explains Managing Director Roland Adrian. The focus is always on the requirements of our partners, as well as regulatory requirements and high security standards.
This orientation is reflected in our products: In addition to the sectoral identity provider for health insurance companies, Verimi developed the so-called Ident-Check, which secures the purchase of Germany tickets by direct debit from public transport partners. This was followed in 2024 by the launch of digital vehicle registration. In the summer of 2025, the company also received eIDAS certification for identification procedures for legal entities – for more than 20 legal forms.

Another milestone followed at the end of 2025: the launch of the EUDI Wallet pilot platform, where companies can test the acceptance and issuance of digital credentials from EUDI wallets even before the market launch. Since the launch of the SPRIN-D sandbox, Verimi has also been connected to the official reference infrastructure in Germany. This underlines Verimi’s claim to operate nationally and across Europe.

European standards as a model for the future

While the Verimi ID wallet is already in use in numerous industries, the white label products have established themselves primarily in the banking, health and mobility sectors. ‘With our EUDI services, we are also continuing to expand our cross-sector services,’ says Adrian. The aim is to actively shape the digital identity landscape – not only for today’s requirements, but also for those of the future.

The market itself is undergoing change. ‘In regulatory terms, the market is clearly moving towards European standards: EUDI wallets are the game changer in favour of digital identities.’ In addition, the Anti-Money Laundering Regulation will further promote automated identification procedures. Traditional video identification procedures are thus losing importance, while purely optical procedures are coming under increasing pressure from AI and deepfakes. ‘The future therefore belongs to digital identities, Verimi’s core business.’

Experience as a competitive advantage

Eight years of development work are now paying off. To date, the Verimi ID wallet is the only wallet with identities at a substantially verified and AML-compliant level. ‘We have gained a wealth of experience, our infrastructure modules have proven themselves in everyday use and our expertise is unique,’ emphasises Adrian.

Technologically, Verimi consistently relies on open-source technologies and EUDI standards. The company develops and operates tailor-made solutions for partners in the field of digital identity data management and verified credentials. Long-term service contracts with partners such as Allianz, Deutsche Bahn, HUK-COBURG, LVM, Provinzial and Volkswagen secure this business model.

Berlin as a location with potential

Verimi is fundamentally positive about Berlin’s deep tech ecosystem. “Berlin’s deep tech ecosystem is dynamic and diverse. There are strong companies, many stakeholders and an active network supported by numerous events.‘ At the same time, the company sees room for improvement in terms of connecting with public projects – both in Berlin and nationwide. ’However, this also presents a great opportunity: if we build bridges to public contracts, we can scale innovations more quickly and further strengthen Berlin as a leading location for digital security and identity.”

From award to market readiness

Three years after winning the Deep Tech Award 2022, Verimi has developed from an award-winning start-up into an established player. With a market coverage of almost 50 per cent in the area of statutory health insurance and partnerships across the German economy, one thing is clear: digital identity is no longer a vision, but a reality.

The award served as a door opener – for visibility, partnerships and investors. What Verimi has achieved since 2022 impressively demonstrates how technological depth and strategic growth can be successfully combined even in highly regulated markets. A Berlin success story that illustrates what is possible with perseverance and innovative strength.
