Das Foto zeigt die einunddreißigjährige deutsch-jüdische Kinder- und Jugendbuchautorin Ruth Rewald mit ihrer Tochter Anja im Jahr 1937 im Exil in Paris – Das Original befand sich im Nachlass der Autorin, der nach seiner Beschlagnahmung durch die Gestapo einen abenteuerlichen Weg über Berlin und Moskau in das Zentrale Staatsarchiv der DDR in Potsdam nahm. Das Foto wurden von Rewalds Ehemann, Hans Schaul, dem Wuppertaler Literaturwissenschaftler, Dr. Dirk Krüger, für seine Dissertation übergeben.

Ruth Rewald was one of the most popular contemporary authors of youth literature in the 1930s. The Jewish author fled to France in 1933. With the new edition published in 2023, the novel is celebrating its return to the book market with Berlin publisher Walter Frey.
At the event, Dr. Dirk Krüger will present the author's life and work. Julia Meier will read from Ruth Rewald's novel Müllerstraße. Boys of today.
Book content (excerpt): "In the early 1930s, Müllerstraße in the north of Berlin: it is the lively center of Wedding. Geuni and his friends live here. The summer vacations have begun, but the hoped-for stay in the country has been canceled: the parents are unemployed, no financial help from the city - consequences of the world economic crisis of 1929. Their vacation plans are thwarted and boredom and arguments spread among the friends. But they have an idea: they create a garden on the flat roof of a house in Müllerstraße, where they want to put on a play they have written themselves together with a girl...
Ruth Rewald describes vividly, excitingly and knowledgeably how the group realized this project - with a lot of wit and imagination, despite material obstacles and resistance from the adults - and gives an insight into the living conditions of the time.
As a Jew and a leftist, she had to emigrate in 1933 and lived in Paris. She was deported from her place of refuge to Auschwitz in 1942 and murdered there. A year and a half later, her six-year-old daughter suffered the same fate; she too was deported and murdered in Auschwitz.
What remains is the memory - and Ruth Rewald's work: an important contribution to German-language children's and youth literature."
