The Football Route Berlin leads to 40 authentic locations in the urban space, makes the unique football history of the capital city tangible and informs about sport, cultural and urban historical contexts. It shows the great importance of football in Germany, which has undergone major changes since its beginnings in the 19th century, and illustrates the achievements of athletes and clubs as well as significant football events in the city.
On 29 May 2015 - just in time for the DFB Cup Final and the 2015 Champions League Final in Berlin - the Football Route Berlin was opened and the majority of the information panels were handed over to the public. In 2017, the remaining information boards were erected and paving slabs were laid at the locations where no building permits had been granted.
The Berlin Football Route is designed as a bicycle tour. However, the locations in the urban space can also be visited on foot, by public transport or by car, as well as individually or in any order. Guided tours are not offered.
The project's website provides information on the individual locations (the main texts of the stations and references to further topics), the route plans and much more: various "extras" such as audio files or additional pictures are provided that cannot be found on the information boards.
Berlin football history to go: The Berlin Football Route is now also part of the berlinHistory app (.
