Some 200 years ago, the journalist Ludwig Börne noted with astonishment on a visit to Berlin: "People of the most diverse kinds are so mixed here that you often find them in places where you wouldn't expect them." And he was right. In Berlin, even then, many things were taken for granted that seemed unthinkable elsewhere. In salons, clubs and pubs, Berlin society cultivated an open exchange of ideas. But where were the meeting places of the time, and who set the tone there? The new permanent exhibition in the Knoblauchhaus Museum tells more about this.

The one-time owner of the house, the entrepreneur Carl Knoblauch, was an outspoken networker whose circle of friends and acquaintances included many prominent figures - among them the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel and the brothers Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt. In their own way, each of them played a part in the flourishing of modern civil society and thus in Berlin's rise to become a European metropolis.
