800 years of history and culture

With a wealth of outstanding original objects, the exhibition puts the Museum Nikolaikirche at the centre of the architectural monument and its history. Interactive media in four languages reveal the many facets of the seven thematic islands:

Searching for traces: the early history of Berlin
From fieldstone to brick: the building history of St. Nikolai's Church
Walks: the Nikolai quarter yesterday and today
World-famous: Hymns from St. Nicholas
Liturgy in transition: sacred works of art and liturgical utensils
Funeral culture in the church interior: the pantheon of Berlin
Lost and rediscovered: the coin treasure from the tower knob

Highlights of the exhibition

A special highlight is the "Beyers Crypt": You can descend via stone steps to the floor level at the time of the city's foundation. There you can also see a unique coin hoard. Berlin citizens collected it between 1514 and 1734 for the tower knob of the Nikolai Church.

The burial culture is illustrated not only by grave monuments (epitaphs), but also by grave goods. For example, pupils of an orphanage threw chestnuts, spinning tops and marbles from their trouser pockets into the grave of their patron Rosina Schindler. A separate section is dedicated to the famous songwriter and Nikolai pastor Paul Gerhardt. On the gallery a lounge with audio, film and reading places invites you to escape the hectic city for a while.
