Berlin's largest barracks and drill grounds were located near today's main railway station until they were almost completely destroyed during the Second World War. The military past has left its mark on the urban area on Kruppstrasse, Rathenower Strasse and Lehrter Strasse.

Participants on the city tour discover the remains of Wilhelmine military architecture and visit sites of National Socialist tyranny. A memorial stele in Kruppstraße commemorates the collection camp of the Secret State Police (Gestapo) in the so-called Tattersall. As part of the "Fabrikaktion", the Gestapo locked up over 1,000 Jews in the riding hall between February 27 and March 2, 1943, before they were deported from the Moabit freight depot to the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp. The Tattersall was demolished after the Second World War and the conversion of the site into police barracks was completed in 1956.

The tour will be led by Jonas Hartmann (scientific volunteer at the Mitte Museum). Please register by e-mail by May 16, as the route is not wheelchair accessible.
