Klassik OpenAir im Jagdschloss Grunewald 2016

The Classical Open Air at Grunewald Hunting Lodge is taking place for the 11th time. This year, the Orpheus Ensemble, conducted by Stefan Meinecke, will perform works by the nature-loving Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg in the open air.
Grieg loved his homeland, the rugged nature, the stories and the Norwegian folk music, which he repeatedly and gladly drew on in his compositions. His aim was to compose music that would also appeal to and touch ordinary people. And yet he had great ambitions. - He succeeded in both. He was one of those artists who achieved fame and popularity during his lifetime. He was celebrated internationally above all for his great orchestral works such as the setting of Ibsen's "Peer Gynt", the Piano Concerto in A minor and the Holberg Suite. However, it was also his smaller works that brought him popularity; "Morning Mood" is a good example of this.

Edvard Grieg found the perfect form of expression in song.
His songs follow the melody of the language and are often simple, clear and rich in folk melodies.Grieg found an outstanding interpreter in his cousin and wife Nina Hagerup, a Norwegian-Danish soprano. At her side, he toured throughout Europe. And after his death in 1907, she took care of his musical legacy.
As with Robert Schumann, both families were vehemently opposed to a marriage.Nina's mother wrote to her daughter: "He is nothing, he has nothing and he writes music that nobody wants to hear."- Mothers-in-law can be wrong.Today, as then, Grieg's songs are among the great and much-loved compositions of the late Romantic period.
The Symphonic Dances op. 64 were the first orchestral work in which Grieg adapted melodies from his homeland for the big stage.
He traveled to the provinces to listen to the melodies of his fellow countrymen. Probably the most popular result of this work is the incidental music to Peer Gynt op. 55. Grieg was of the opinion that his music to Peer Gynt would not be accepted outside Norway. He therefore compiled the orchestral suites from this music in 1891, dispensing with dialog and vocals.
