Retrotopia: Design for Socialist Spaces

The Museum of Decorative Arts' special exhibition titled "Retrotopia" is dedicated to utopian designs and visions for a better future during the Cold War era.

Kunstgewerbemuseum

The exhibition "Retrotopia: Design for Socialist Spaces" focuses explicitly on the countries of the former, so-called Eastern Bloc. The exhibition in the Kunstgewerbemuseum's special exhibition in the Berliner Kulturforum follows a double impulse: it aims to fill gaps in the sense of a transnational history of design and thus contribute to a pluralistic image and a reassessment of "utopian modernism." In addition, it reflects on the significance of design as a cultural identity-forming factor of the individual post-socialist countries and its function as a diplomatic soft power in the field of political tension between the world powers.

The Museum of Decorative Arts invited twelve different teams of experts to jointly develop the exhibition and present exemplary design environments for public and private spaces, ranging from kitchens to airport lounges.
