From Bowie's flat in Schöneberg to the "Jungle" and the Hansa Studios: These are the places where David Bowie lived and worked during his time in Berlin.

The extraordinary artist, who died of cancer in New York in 2016 at the age of 69, spent some of his most creative and prolific years in 1970s Berlin. Follow us on a short tour of the most important places in David Bowie's life in Berlin:

David Bowie's Home in Schöneberg

Bowie's former home is located in the Schöneberg district on Hauptstraße 155. Fellow musician Iggy Pop also lived for a time in the seven-room flat on the first floor of the rather plain old Berlin building in former West Berlin. David Bowie himself lived here from 1976 to 1978.

The Hansa Studios and the Meistersaal

Bowie recorded his album trilogy "Low", "Heroes" and "Lodger" in the legendary Hansa Studios in Berlin. The title track of the "Heroes" album, which was recorded in the legendary Meistersaal ("masters hall"), became the anthem of a divided city and its longing for freedom. The studios are located on Köthener Straße 38 in Kreuzberg.

Bowie in the "Jungle"

Since it opened in 1978, the club "Dschungel" ("Jungle" in English) has had plenty of celebrity regulars. In addition to Bowie and his roommate Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, Blixa Bargeld and other well-known artists were also drawn to the Schöneberg discotheque. The club was located on located at Nürnberger Straße 50-55 but closed definitively in 1993. Today, the premises belong to Berlin's Hotel Ellington.

«Neues Ufer»: Bowie's Favourite Café

Bowie was a regular at the café located just a few metres away from his flat, on Hauptstraße 157. Back in the 1970s, the café was still called "Anderes Ufer". The location was opened in 1977 and was considered the first gay café in Berlin.

David Bowie in the Bavarian Quarter

Before the musician moved to usy Hauptstraße, he lived on the rather tranquil Schwäbische Straße 7 in the Bavarian Quarter. Here he spent a few days as a guest of Edgar Froese, the founder of the group Tangerine Dream.
