Through the transgressive act of voluntary self objectification Laura Stokes speaks to the pleasure that is inherently woven into the fabric of gender dynamics that has allowed a culture of violation to flourish. True to the historic ethos of burlesque this show elevates weighted issues to a place that they become laughable, and in that place no one is blamed, but everyone is invited to empathize with the weight of culpability. With hair suspension, brave characters, acrobatics, and otherworldy body puppetry, this one-woman circus will transport the audiences into a world of make-believe and heart-wrenching honesty. The piece is at once strikingly pertinent to our times, and a timeless celebration of performed femininity. A feast for the eyes, heart and intellect that rounds into to a profound examination of how we all perform identity.
