Popa Chubby, whose real name is Ted Horowitz, is a true son of the Big Apple. He was born in the Bronx in 1960 and grew up in a neighborhood made famous by Robert De Niro's famous movie 'A Bronx Tale'. In his childhood, he listened to the early sixties soul and R&B hits on the juke box, which left a deep impression on him. To this day, the musical influences of Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye are still reflected in Popa's music.
He picked up his first guitar at the age of 16 and never put it down. He played his fingers to death trying to imitate the blues licks he knew second-hand from the rockers who played them. In the late seventies, Popa was hired by punk rock legend Richard Hell for a world tour. Throughout the eighties, Popa explored different styles of music, which gave him the foundation to survive as a professional musician. Chubby was hired for another world tour and asked to contribute his blues-heavy guitar sound to Pierce Turner's album The Sky and The Ground. Popa worked with Pierce in the late 80s.
The Popa Chubby Band was then founded in 1990. The name came about during an impromptu jam session with Bernie Worell, one of the founding members of the psychedelic rock and R&B group Parliament-Funkadelic.
Popa Chubby's music has been shaped by the influences of New York City. His innovative style combines the blues with rock, rap and soul. With his razor-sharp, biting guitar and phenomenal songwriting skills, Popa Chubby artistically blends the roots of the blues with the modern urban elements of today's hip music.
On the European tour in spring 2024, Chubby will present his new album, which was released in September 2023. Together with his `Beast Band` he will celebrate a wide range of his songs on European stages.
