Thousands of people visited the Red Town Hall on Open House Day. They took the opportunity to explore Berlin’s seat of government in the Mitte district, learn about its functions, and meet politicians such as Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) in person. The Senate Chancellery counted a total of 7,000 guests, and at times there were long lines at the entrance.
According to a Senate spokesperson, the discussion sessions with Wegner, Senator for Economic Affairs Franziska Giffey (SPD), Senator for Finance Stefan Evers (CDU), and the state secretaries of the Senate Chancellery were particularly popular. Visitors were also able to tour the office of the Governing Mayor, the Senate chamber, and other facilities
During a scavenger hunt, they were able to explore the building in a fun way. Young visitors also had the chance to ask Wegner questions at a children’s press conference. Berlin’s bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games was presented, and two mobile city offices were on site. The open house was held for the second time; last year, around 8,300 people attended.
“Our democracy thrives on dialogue,” said host Wegner. He expressed his delight that so many Berliners and visitors were interested in the work of the Senate Chancellery and the Senate. “At the open house at the Red Town Hall, we engage with citizens to discuss how our democracy works—and how we can strengthen and protect it.”
