After a car struck and injured several people on the outskirts of Christopher Street Day in Berlin, police are searching for suspects.
A large number of police officers are on the scene in the Tiergarten area, where the incident occurred shortly after 10:00 p.m.
All visitors were asked to leave the area. A spokesperson urged people to go home and to avoid taking the route through the Tiergarten toward the Victory Column. According to police, at least one person was killed in the incident. Police spokesperson Florian Nath said that 14 other people are currently being treated for injuries.
The Berlin Police have set up a person information center for family members. Those affected can contact the agency by calling 030 8485 4460. Witnesses are asked to submit any relevant information, as well as photos or videos they have taken themselves of the incident, through the Berlin Police reporting platform (Hinweisportal) to assist with the ongoing investigation.
Berlin’s Governing Mayor, Kai Wegner, issued a statement overnight: “This is an attack on our free and cosmopolitan society—following a peaceful and vibrant CSD, the gathering in support of a tolerant and peaceful Berlin was attacked in the most brutal manner. Berlin is the city of freedom—and our freedom has been attacked in the most horrific way today. My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and friends. I thank the emergency responders who were on the scene immediately and did everything in their power. And I have confidence in the police and security authorities, who will be investigating this with the utmost urgency.”
