With the International Congress Center (ICC) Berlin, one of the most striking building complexes in the capital opens its doors for the Open Heritage Day.

Under the motto "Full of Energy", visitors can discover numerous otherwise closed or inaccessible places in Berlin this weekend.

ICC to become a cultural and meeting place

Already on Friday, Economics Senator Franziska Giffey (SPD) wanted to clear the way for "48 h ICC" in the building at the Funkturm, which is in need of renovation and has been closed since 2014. According to the latest plans, the ICC is to become a cultural and meeting place modelled on the Centre Pompidou in Paris. An international concept competition is being prepared for this.

Open Heritage Day revolves around the theme of energy

The topic of energy is to be viewed from various angles on the Open Monument Day. Owners of listed power stations and transformer stations, mills and turbine factories can address energy in a very concrete way, according to the responsible State Office for Monuments. All buildings are increasingly valued as reservoirs of "grey energy", which should not be destroyed by demolition but saved by preserving the buildings. The preservationists see the cultural added value of the architectural heritage as "golden energy".
